Becoming a model in Michigan might seem like a daunting task, but with the right steps, dedication, and knowledge, you can turn your dreams into reality. This guide will share how to get into modeling in Michigan and set you on the path to success.

Understanding the Michigan Modeling Scene

Michigan offers a unique blend of opportunities for aspiring models. While it may not have the same level of exposure as New York or Los Angeles, the state has a robust fashion and commercial market. From Detroit's vibrant arts scene to the growing fashion industry in Grand Rapids, there's a variety of avenues to explore.

Steps to Becoming a Model in Michigan

1. Assess Your Goals and Strengths

Before diving into the modeling world, it's crucial to understand what type of modeling suits you best. Are you interested in high fashion, commercial, fitness, or plus-size modeling? Each niche has its own requirements and market demand. You are not always the best judge of this yourself, and can create your struggles trying to buck the trend. Often models can benefit from having a Manager them with these assessments.

For example; within the world of fashion modeling, there are runways models. Runway models are generally 5'8" and taller. You can still be a fashion model even if you're not 5'8". However, taller models may have more success in getting runway jobs. Swimwear models often have less height requirement, with more emphasis on how their bodies help embellish the swimsuit.

2. Build Your Portfolio

A strong modeling portfolio is your ticket to getting noticed by agencies, managers, and clients. Here's how to create one:

  • Professional Photos: Invest in a professional photoshoot to capture high-quality images. Include headshots, full-body shots, and a variety of looks and poses.

  • Diverse Looks: Showcase some of your versatility by featuring different outfits, hairstyles, and expressions. But Casting Directors, and Producers do like to know what you look like at the moment so don't build a great portfolio as a brunette and come into a casting with blonde hair. If you change your hair color you need to build a portfolio that reflects that. At the very least if you are selected for casting, let your representatives know that you recently changed your hair color.

  • Natural Look: While makeup and styling are essential, agencies also appreciate seeing your natural look. Include some photos with minimal makeup and simple clothing.

3. Research and Approach Modeling Agencies

Finding the right agency is a crucial step in your modeling journey. Research reputable agencies in Michigan and look for ones that align with your modeling goals. Other equally great agencies exist, but some well-known agencies in Michigan include:

  • The I Group: Based in Southfield, this agency represents models for fashion, commercial, and promotional work.

  • Unique Models & Talent: Located in Grand Rapids, they focus on fashion, commercial, and lifestyle modeling.

  • The Talent Shop: With offices in Troy, this agency specializes in commercial modeling and acting.

When approaching agencies:

  • Submit Your Portfolio: Most agencies have online submission forms. Ensure your portfolio is polished and adheres to any guidelines posted on their website.

  • Attend Open Calls: Some agencies hold open call auditions where you can present yourself in person.

  • If an Agency does not select you, it's not the end of the world. You can still forge a successful career without an agency. Agencies are not the only way to book modeling jobs.

  • I do recommend working with one agency exclusively though. Agents are usually less interested in non-exclusive relationships with models.

  • From the agent's point of view, what is the benefit of using their connections to get you work? If another agent can take advantage of that success and book you jobs, it limits the original agent. This agent initially took a risk for you, but now doesn't get the full reward. Show some loyalty.

4. Develop Your Skills

Modeling is more than just looking good in front of a camera. Developing your skills, or developing a truly charismatic personality can really set you apart from the competition. Be someone people think they would enjoy booking on set. Don't just think this is your opportunity to act like a prima dona.

  • Take Modeling Classes: Obviously, I think you should take my modeling classes, but there are many local schools and agencies offer classes on posing, runway walking, and acting.

  • Practice Posing: Regularly practice different poses in front of a mirror to become comfortable and confident.

  • Stay Fit and Healthy: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for all types of modeling. Focus on a balanced diet and regular exercise.

5. Network and Gain Experience

Networking is key in the modeling industry. Attend local fashion shows, industry events, and workshops to meet professionals and other aspiring models. Additionally, consider:

  • Collaborating with Photographers: Work with local photographers on test shoots to build your portfolio and gain experience.

  • Participating in Fashion Shows: Volunteer for local fashion shows or charity events. These are great opportunities to gain runway experience and exposure.

  • Attend a NY or LA fashion week event. You can get exposed to the experience, without the obligation of being in the experience.

6. Utilize Online Platforms

In today's digital age, leaving a comp card at an audition isn't the norm anymore, but having some online presence is crucial. Use social media platforms like Instagram to showcase your portfolio and connect with industry professionals.

7. Understand the Business Side

Modeling is a business, and understanding the financial aspects is vital:

  • Contracts and Agreements: Always read and understand contracts before signing. Seek legal advice if necessary.

  • Payment Terms: Be aware of how and when you'll be paid for assignments. Most agencies always take a commission... that's how they make their money...so understand the terms.

Overcoming Challenges in the Modeling Industry

The modeling industry can be competitive and sometimes overwhelming for male and female models. Here are some common challenges and how to overcome them:

Rejection

Rejection is part of the process for professional models. Don't take it personally. Use it as a learning experience and keep improving your skills. A lot of the times, rejection is not even about you, so do your best and forget the rest.

Maintaining Confidence

Confidence is key in modeling. Practice positive self-talk, stay focused on your goals, and surround yourself with supportive people.

Balancing Work and Modeling

If you're balancing modeling with another job or education, time management is crucial. Prioritize your commitments and create a schedule that allows you to pursue modeling without compromising other responsibilities.

Ultimately you want to be a well balanced individual. We can't all model into our 60's like Vanna White. So it's important to continue to build yourself outside of your modeling career.

Real-Life Success Stories

To inspire you further, here are some real-life success stories of models from Michigan:

Grace Elizabeth

Originally from Lake City, Michigan, Grace Elizabeth is now a renowned fashion model. She has walked for major brands like Victoria's Secret and appeared on the covers of top fashion magazines.

Taylor Hill

Hailing from Palatine, Illinois, but discovered in Michigan, Taylor Hill has become one of the top models in the industry. She has worked with high-profile brands such as Versace and Valentino.

Takeaways

Becoming a model in Michigan is an achievable goal with the right approach and dedication. From building a strong portfolio to networking and understanding the business side, each step is crucial in your journey. Remember, every successful model started somewhere, and with perseverance, you too can make it in the modeling world.

Success is also relative. There's simply not enough jobs out there for everyone to receive an exclusive modeling contract from their favorite brand.

Don't let this stop you from achieving your goals though. Create a new playbook, develop some additional skills that will help you achieve the kind of success you'd like to achieve.

There's no reason you can't start your own modeling blog and work with your favorite brands making commissions on sales. Don't be lazy, waiting for someone to drop out of the sky and pick you as the face of blah blah blah... Build your own team... Get a photographer, stylists, MUA, SEO content writer... Assemble your own dream team and create your own success! There are very successful people that have done just that!

By following these actionable steps, you'll be well on your way to becoming a successful model in Michigan. Good luck, and remember to stay true to yourself throughout the process. I am available to consult for with you... contact me Aaron@ACXimages.com, or call 844.711.1130.
